The Kingfisher Trail
A few months ago, I hiked Pinnacle Mountain completely enveloped in fog. I hadn't hiked this trail in several years, and my body let me know it. I wanted to stretch my legs on a flat path before getting back in my car, so I cooled down on the Kingfisher Trail.
The sun had managed to burn away most of the fog by the time I made it off the little mountain and the day was getting warmer.
The Kingfisher Trail is about a mile long, fully paved, and winds around trees and over wetlands. I took a family's photo by a 500 year old bald cypress tree. It was a couple and the wife's father from out of state. He proudly informed me that he would be turning 90 soon. Roughly one-fifth of the bald cypress trees.
They're called bald cypress trees because they lose their needles in the winter. This was mid-November, so these trees still had a bit of cover.
I read each sign carefully, mostly so that I could rest. I remember walking the trail with my daughter when she was a lot smaller and it was an effort to pull her away from the playground. She would stop at every bench and sit on it to try it out.
I did go closer to the water's edge and squat down for a few pictures. It was a slow trip coming back to a stand.
It's always worth it to see some cypress knees, though.
